Josef Scharl

(1886-1915)
Was born in Munich. He participated in WWI and studied at Academy of Fine Arts in Munich. From 1921 he worked as an independent artist and had his first big individual Exhibition in 1933 in Berlin.

The Nazis declared his works as “Degenerate Art”. Scharl emigrated to the USA in 1938. He was a friend of Albert Einstein. 

Scharl had many exhibitions in the USA and, after 1946, also in Germany. His works, especially his oil paintings are represented in famous Museums and private collections. 

Scharl died in 1954 in New York. His death was unexpected and his remaining art was returned to his brother in Munich.
