Max Bermuth

1872-1960

Bermuth was born in Leipzig and trained as a lithographer. He studied at the Leipzig Academy of Arts and the Munich Academy of Arts.

His work for the Art Nouveau Journal “Die Jugend” made him well known. From 1902 he was Professor of Art in Elberfeld. Many of his students became famous artists.

Bermuth loved the mountains and moved to Bayrisch Gmain in 1939. He was a member of the German Association of Arts and belonged to the circle around Max Klinger, Otto Greiner and Adolph Menzel.

Bermuth was well known for his not only for his paintings and sculptures but also for his book illustrations.
